Not the perfect solutionJan 27, 2011
By J. Olsen I had tried the little rubber adhesive backed feet and the sandpaper dots, but I was still searching for the perfect solution to the slippery backs of the quilting rulers. For me, this doesn't seem to be it. In a class I took 2 or 3 years ago our instructor told us about this product and how wonderful it is. I bought two packages to make sure I had enough to cover the backs of all my rulers--I have more rulers than I really need. The application didn't go quite as smoothly as the instructions indicated. It just didn't want to stick to some of the rulers (all of which were the same Omnigrid brand). It is supposed to work on the principle of static cling, I guess, but I ended up having to dampen some of the rulers to make this product stick. There is no adhesive involved. This is a plus when it comes to removal if you decide not to keep it on your rulers--no sticky backs--but then, maybe that would be the solution I am looking for.
I found that when the product was new it did seem to lessen slightly the tendency of the ruler to slide across the fabric as you apply pressure and cut. However, it didn't seem to last very long. The more I used the rulers the more it appeared that the film had less and less of its nominal at best gripping power. I haven't taken the time to tear it off of all of my rulers--it isn't hurting anything where it is, even if it isn't greatly helping. But as edges start to curl up I peel it off and I have about half of my rulers with it and half without. I admit that as I work with them I have a hard time telling which have it and which don't.
If anyone has a recommendation about something that has really worked for them I would be interested. My complaint about the little rubber feet is the fact that the ruler doesn't sit flat on the fabric and the fabric can shift a little as you cut--especially at the edges or folds. The sandpaper dots grabbed the fabric too well at times, making repositioning of the rulers difficult, and they are not transparent, so wherever you apply them they obscure the lines on the rulers. This is especially bothersome on the smallest rulers. I had hoped this product would solve my problem, but I will keep looking.
Better cutting of your materialsApr 08, 2012
By Melody I added the Omnigrid to several of my templates. the Omnigrid keeps it in place, and keeps it from shifting, when you use a rotary cutter. I will put it on all of mine. Worth every penny.
I love it!Feb 06, 2012
By Melisa Michaels This stuff is wonderful. I'm back for more because I only put it on the rulers I use most often, and now I want it on the rest. I don't know why some people have had such trouble with it. I've never had it come off, curl up, or anything of that sort. It goes on and stays on, and helps keep the ruler from sliding.
It doesn't make the ruler stick to the fabric -- You still have to use pressure -- But I don't think I'd want something that made it difficult to move the ruler when I want to. This just makes it less likely to move when I don't want it to. It still can. If you're looking for something that will glue your ruler to your fabric, this isn't it. If all you want is a ruler that doesn't slide so easily, this will provide it.
Be sure your hands and the ruler are clean before starting. Be sure to put the same side against the ruler as was against the paper. Don't stretch it, don't mess with it, don't fuss: it doesn't have to be perfect. It should be at least a quarter inch smaller than the ruler on every side, but can be even smaller than that. Doesn't even have to be the exact shape of the ruler, though you'll have better luck if it does cover most of it. Just put it on, smooth it out, and you're good to go.
I've had it on my primary cutting ruler for several years and it has never curled or come off. Still works great. Recently put some from the same package on a second ruler -- It had been so long I had forgotten there would be no adhesive involved -- and the second one is working great, too. Used the last scrap on a little template (my original package may have been smaller than this one), and I'm buying more for my other rulers as soon as I've posted this review.
easy and effectiveDec 08, 2011
By Gay Hapgood I've had very good luck with this product and have used it on quite a few rulers. I did have one corner lift off on the first ruler I put it on a couple of years ago but otherwise no problems. I find it helps a lot in preventing rulers from shifting. I lay the ruler I want to use it on slightly "off" the Invisigrip, cut it with my rotary cutter, lay it tacky side down on the back of the ruler and remove the heavy paper backing, holding down the corner as I do. The Invisigrip will probably lift off while you're removing the backing, just lay it back down on the ruler and smooth it out, press down on it while doing so. One caution: wash your hands (and maybe the ruler, too, if it's well-used)to remove any lotions or oils - they can keep the product from sticking.
Not in a perfect worldNov 23, 2011
By Judy Larsen I agree that this is not a perfect product. It does come loose at the corners, but has anyone found anything better? Slipping rulers drive me crazy.
